Juliana is making some gorgeous pieces to display at the famous eatery. It’s fitting for two reasons: Mel’s has a history of philanthropy; Juliana’s Guitar Town contribution–”There’s Something Happening Here” ten-foot Gibson Les Paul–is displayed at the restaurant’s entrance. (link here)

It’s going to be a grand time, so be sure you are there between 6pm – 10pm on June 30th, 2012!!

Juliana Martinez has created a magical storybook backdrop for the children’s play area of this affordable housing development for families. The 40 ft. mural was assembled from over three thousand clay and glass pieces to depict a wonderland of bejeweled sunlight, calla lilies, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Each tile is completely handmade, with the artist inspired by the Arts and Crafts’ architectural features and color palette of the development. Community participation is an important component in the artist’s work, with over two hundred students at the adjacent 28th Street Elementary School involved in the fabrication of the central magnolia tree motif.

The 40 ft. wall mural in the Children’s Garden at 29th Street Crossing is her pride and joy.

29th Street Crossings has really turned out to be beautiful place. Even though it’s an affordable housing project you can see UHC’s attention to detail. The quality of the materials throughout the development is really quite remarkable. If I were a rich person I would want to live there. They have a deep understanding of the fact that real people are going to live there, and I think they tried to create a comfortable and attractive atmosphere the developer, themselves, would be happy to live in.

Juliana doesn’t leave the decorating to city projects, either. From her Google Sites page:

She appears tireless as she talks animatedly about her ideas and current projects, surrounded by soon-to-be beautified, closely stacked furniture.

At the moment Juliana is working on a large picture frame. Nowhere near it’s finished state, it will be something to see how she transforms it from wood to a sparkling gem!

Art and movie posters adorn her walls, including this mock-up of the wall mosaic, now enjoyable in the Children’s Garden of a housing unit–The Crossings on 29th Street–located at the corner of San Pedro and 29th Street.

In these unfinished tables we see the foundation before the bond is laid in between each tiny piece.

Using her signature handmade tiles and ornate style, Juliana has crafted a gorgeous dedication entitled “There’s Something Happening Here”. The placard reads:

Inspired by the music and spirit of Buffalo Springfield. The guitar utilizes symbols that resonate with the band.

Right now the guitar can be seen and photographed at the entrance of Mel’s Drive-In – West Hollywood.

Juliana’s “Summer of Love” Gibson celebrates the ’60s counterculture movement on The Sunset Strip. It now lives in China.
